Dear QSI Families,                                        January 14, 2010

Below you will find a letter to all staff members sent from Chancellor Klein relating to the devastation that took place in Haiti.  QSI students and staff have decided to collect money and send it to Haiti via Reverend Mendoza who collects money and buys medical, food, and clothing supplies and ships them directly to ravage countries like Haiti.

If you would like to make a donation please send to me and I’ll make sure they get every penny.  If you’d like to make a donation to another charity please see the information listed below.

Sincerely,

Rosie Moyano Parent Coordinator

Dear Colleagues,

Like so many other New Yorkers, I was deeply saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake in Haiti last night. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti, and with their families, in this time of terrible tragedy.

In this time of crisis, our school communities must join together to help our fellow New Yorkers and to assist the millions of people in need. Many of our students, or their parents, are Haitian immigrants, and are coping with unimaginable grief. We must do all we can to support these children and their families.

As President Obama announced earlier today, the State Department has released a phone number for families trying to reach their loved ones in Haiti. Please inform families that they should call 1-888-407-4747 for assistance in reaching family members. Crisis counselors are already working in many of our schools with large Haitian populations, but if you feel that your school community would benefit from having a crisis counselor on site, please contact your ISC or CFN. You can also contact Anthony Orzo in the Office of School and Youth Development at AOrzo@schools.nyc.gov.

Many of our school communities are asking how they can help those in need. Mayor Bloomberg outlined the City’s response to the crisis earlier today. While food and supplies are needed in Haiti, there is no infrastructure currently in place to distribute them to those in need. Therefore, the Mayor has suggested that the best way to help is by contributing money.  Donations can be made to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York, which will then distribute them to reputable relief organizations, including the Red Cross, working in Haiti. To learn how to donate, visit www.nyc.gov/fund or call 311.

Thank you for supporting our students and families during this difficult time, and for showing them how our community can unite to help those in need.

Sincerely,

Joel I. Klein
