Winterstorms!
I found an article on http://www.fema.gov/kids about winterstorms. There are important thing to know about winterstorms. It is also important to know what to do in a winterstorm.
It can be very dangerous and not good if you don't dress correctly in cold temperatures. Blocked roads and power lines falling down is caused by heavy snow and ice. During winter, there can be lot of heavy snowfall and it can be very cold in lots areas of different countries.
You sould learn some important terms about winterstorms.
- Blizzard Warning means that there will be blinding snow, deep drifts, life-threatening wind chill, and near zero visibility.
- Freezing rain means that there will be a coating of ice on roads and walkways created by rain that will freeze when hitting the ground.
- Frost/Freeze Warning means that we will expect below-freezing temperatures.
- Sleet means that before reaching the ground, rain will turns into ice pellets. Roads freezing and become icy are also caused by sleet.
- Winter Storm Warning means that having begun or will begin very soon, are severe winter weather conditions. Winter
- Storm Watch means that possibly in the next day or two, severe winter weather such as heavy snow or ice, sleet, or hail may happen.
- Winter Weather Advisory means that cold temperatures, ice and/or snow are expected to happen.
For an oncoming winterstorms, be prepared by keeping stored: if you have one, wood for your fireplace, sand to improve traction, extra food that doesn’t need cooking (like canned food), and rock salt to melt ice. If electricity does't work, keep battery-powered items like battery-powered lamps, flashlights, battery-powered radio, and of course, extra batteries.
If going out in frigid weather, dress in multiple layers of clothing. To protect your internal organs from getting cold air,protect your mouth with a scarf. Wearing a hat can keep your head warm and help you feel warmer. Mittens keep warmer than gloves.Be careful of frost bite.Frost bite will take place when you aren't wearing enough to keep warm or in very cold temperatures, your skin is showing. When having frost bite,you'll feel like you won't have a feeling in that part of your body. Such as your finger, toe, or the tip of your nose. The frost bite may turn white or pale, if it does, get help right away!
