Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Living Environment.  I am so excited to be working with this year's eighth graders.  They have shown themseleves to be such dynamic personalities, caring and hard working.

Please check this site to found homework posted, and important links.

We have just completed the Characteristics of Life as well as the Levels of Organization.  We have had a one quiz.

We also have a new class pet named Mushu.  Its too young to know if its a boy or a girl, but its a baby bearded water dragon.  The students enjoy watching him eat crickets.

Looking forward to a great year!  Sincerely, Mrs. Roter

HAPPY 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope you relaxed and had fun.  I did.  We will continue learning about cells this week focusing on how ALL cells use glucose to make energy, ( aka respiration) and then how plant cells make their OWN glucose.. yes.. photosynthesis!

Once that is done we will move onto how cells divide and reproduce themseleves.  Those of you who have not completed your webpages, and there are many of you,  still have a chance to do so!!!!!! I will keep the assignment open until we stop talking about cells....Have a great day! Mrs. Roter

Here is the link I promised you for viewing animations on enzyme activity.  Also, hope you are continuing andf enjoying working on your energy bar recipes... try an get them done by Wednesday.. Thanks..Mrs. Roter : )

PS There is a formative test on Wednesday and a Summative one Next Tuesday!!!

How Enzymes Work    Just found this one:  What is an Enzyme

and my favorite: Lew-Ports Biology Place

We are well into our work on cells and the chemistry of life.  We have covered carbohydrates and lipids and will be starting proteins and enzymes in the next few days.. This will lead to a discusssion of respiration and photosythesis.

LAB:  The focus in lab as of now is to start, complete and write up the first NY State lab that will appear on the regents.. known as the " Clothespin Lab".  Completing this lab is mandatory for students to complete in order to take the regents in June.

I WILL NEED TWO COPIES OF THIS LAB.  ONE FOR THE STATE AND ONE TO RETURN TO YOU GRADED. YOU MAY USE THIS LAB FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO.

You need to write this lab up as a formal lab with a  question, hypothesis, procedure, data chart and conclusion.  In addition you must define the variables

The format is in your lab manual.  We will be doing the lab this week and it will be due the Wednesday before vacation!!!! Take Care..Mrs. Roter

Glad to hear that you thought the  Ecology test was easy.  I know "I" class did not have as much time as the others and I will make adjustments keeping that in mind.

I just wanted to let you know that I will be posting when labs are due both here and on the homework calendar from now on.  This should help all of us stay on the same page so to speak.

Most of you have returned your wolf proposals and I will be looking at them during the next few days.  I am really impressed with the work you brought in and your ability to reason and argue.

There will be a test on Thursday covering the topics in ecology that have not been tested.  I have all of the topics listed as a home entry on the Calendar.

Also, dont forget to use our online textbook frequently.  There are great animations and videoclips available to you.

There will be a test on Wednesday October 22, 2008.  It will include the levels of ecology, symbiotic relationships, and the three cycles ( Nitrogen, Carbon and Water cycle).  To help you study you may use your notes, but I will include the site for an on-line textbook that you can read and listen to and interact with.  See instruction below:

When asked for the username and password they are both the same:   sci08 ( that small "s" small "c" small "i"  zero eight) for both the password and the username.

Then click on Login... you will see three text with leopards on the cover.. go to the third one that says," Living Environment". The book pages will load.  Click on the arrow to select which chapter you want to load.   Go to Chapter 4-Ecology.

We are getting deeper into the unit on Ecology.  On October 30th we will be going to Alley Pond Environmental Center for a workshop and field tour.  Attendance is limited to those students who have no lateness October 1st-October 30th.

Start to find an inquiry question involving an environmental issue.  Make a list of materials and supplies that you will need to answer your question.  To help you, I am providing some links that may spur your curiousity.

If these links give you trouble, just google Bottle Biology and Ecology experiments and these will come up as options.  Have fun!
